In Tutorial 3, you'll keep practicing the skills you have already learned, and add in shade and value.

Typically inking is just black and white, but Jake will show you different techniques for getting those gray tones.

Students will learn fundamental inking techniques in a chill, follow-along style of teaching from Jake.

In this class you will learn how to:

  • Hold the pen to get the best linework from it
  • Techniques for drawing long graceful lines
  • Techniques for drawing short lines
  • Techniques for shading with a pen
  • How to add value and pattern to your drawing to get the effect of different shades of gray


This tutorial consists of 7 pre-recorded videos showing each step of the inking process on one particular drawing. Students will be be able to download the drawing, print it out, and ink over the top of it as they follow along with the videos.

About the Instructor

Illustrator/Cartoonist Jake Parker

For the last 19 years Jake has worked on everything from animated films to comics to picture books. For several years he worked for Reel FX and Blue Sky Studios on such projects as Horton Hears a Who, Rio, and Epic. He is the creator of the popular Inktober drawing challenge. Jake currently works as an illustrator and cartoonist on children's books and comics. He works out of his home studio in Arizona.
