Not Sure How To Fix Your Art?

Ever had the feeling that something is off about your illustration, but not quite sure what? We've all been there! Sometimes it helps to get another point of view. Every month, we'll be taking submissions from our students and demonstrating how to improve.

This is your chance to see how a pro would do it!

Current & Upcoming Prompts

SAM WOKE UP TO FIND THAT NOTHING MADE SENSE. SHE WENT OUTSIDE AND EVERYTHING WAS WEIRD! BUT EVERYONE WAS ACTING LIKE IT WAS NORMAL!

This is a chance for you to tell a visual story well beyond the prompt! Don’t get tempted to try to illustrate too many concepts in your image. Write a creative story within the prompt. Try to write a story that is funny, sad, exciting, etc.

Here’s an example of one way you could show that nothing made sense: The family is sitting down to a dinner feast on a huge table full of ice cream sundaes, all kinds of candy, donuts, cotton candy, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, brownies, pies, etc.

JEREMY NEVER THOUGHT HIS MACHINE WOULD ACTUALLY WORK.

This prompt came to us from Braden Hallett, one of our SVS students! We want you to write the rest of this story in visual form. Ask yourself as many questions as you can think of:
Who is Jeremy? How old is he? Where does he live? What does he look like? What kind of clothes does he wear? What time period does he live in? Did he make the machine or buy it? Did he have help?
Your story should have an interesting problem and an interesting solution. The solution could be what the machine allows Jeremy to do, fix, escape, navigate, etc. Have fun with this one! SAYING GOODBYE

This prompt came to us from Reb Erlik, one of our students! How would you show the rest of the story visually?. Be sure to ask lots of questions before settling on a concept:
Who or what is saying goodbye? Why are they saying goodbye? Where does it happen? What is the reason for the goodbye? What time of year is it? What time period is it? Is it a sad goodbye or happy? Are there other characters involved?
Don’t settle on your first idea - explore many different possibilities and keep asking questions! Have fun with this one! Your finished illustration can be in any format. Upload your finished illustration to the forum by October 1st, 2024.
