Get ready for some Photoshop brush building fun!

This video will walk you step by step through the photoshop brush building process. Lee includes the full set of brushes and textures used in the demos so you can follow along. He also shows not just how to build the brushes, but also how to use them in different illustration applications. Brush settings will be discussed in detail to give you control of building your own custom brush library.

First we will start with Chaos which simply refers to building rough, textured brushes for big beautiful backgrounds. By knowing how to build brushes that create randomness, we can start to harness the real power of photoshop brushes.

Next we move into creating Control brushes. What that means is using photoshop brushes to create imagery and speed up your painting process. By learning to control the brush with careful attention to settings, your possibilities will be endless.

Finally we will build some natural media brushes. We start with a how to create a natural looking sumi ink brush. We have also included a intermediate/advanced bonus video on creating a custom watercolor brush.

In this class you will learn:

  • Building wild textured brushes for backgrounds

  • Using found textures and photos as a starting point for building a brush

  • How all the brush settings work together

  • How to mimic natural media like ink and watercolor

  • How to build image brushes to make your illustrations faster and better

  • What to avoid when using Photoshop’s basic brushes

  • Beginner masking techniques used together with a captured photoshop brush

A wonderfully clear explanation of how to creating custom brushes. A methodical well paced presentation on the method of building 9 brushes with attributes that can be applied to new brushes you can now create yourself. An inspiring group of about 15 other useful brushes and several applications in the painting of backgrounds was also presented. Well worth the time to take notes and replay for clarity. An excellent college level course of instruction for a student at any age with some familiarity with Photoshop software. The tool preset download was accepted by Photoshop CS6 when I dragged the folder into the Adobe Tool Preset folder in Explorer. Thanks so much Lee White. Awesome job on delivering an incredible amount of useful information that can be applied toward painting illustration and illustrated commercial products for the retail market.

Greatly enjoyed the class. Video was not too long, but covered all the basics of creating brushes using preset materials in Photoshop, along with scanning real life materials. I really liked that I could apply the lessons to my digital painting software (Clip Studio Paint) without too much trouble. Now I can get to creating as much as I like! Thanks Lee!
